John Winthrop was an English Puritan lawyer and he was the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts bay colony . He was the second major settlement in New England following Plymouth colony . Winthrop led the first large wave of immigrants from England in 1630 and served as governor for 12 of the colony’s first 20 years . The devices John Winthrop uses in his passage is Imagery , Allusion , Diction to motivate his people. John Winthrop does a great job motivating his people to be a good example by using imagery, and using small words to paint his picture.
