Assertion Analysis Blog #5 : Cheif Joseph
Chief Joseph , A Native American tribe member of the interior Pacific Northwest region of the United States, in the latter half of the 19th century. When the United States attempted to force Nez Perce to move to a reservation in 1877, he reluctantly agreed to leave. Throughout the passage Chief Joseph uses parallelism, syntax and pathos to portray his reasoning behind his relinquish.
Chief Joseph in his passage was talking about how all his men are getting taken away because of what type war they are in . Joseph talks about how tired he is of fighting if he's people are still getting taken away . And he's giving up because all he's people are dead . Chief joseph and his tribe were taken out of there reservation and had to go somewhere else , they struggling with no food , no blanket and no sleep . hes people were dying day by day and the numbers were decreasing day by day . and the chief couldn't handle it anymore so he surrendered.
The most affected devices he used in he’s passage was parallelism . He uses parallelism throughout his passage to explain the devastation that was happening in his lands . “Our Chiefs are killed .. old men are dead “ The second most important device Chief Joseph used was syntax. He uses syntax to create a very intelligent sentence. In the passage Joseph states, “I will fight no more forever.” The meaning of that sentence is him explaining that he gave up on war, and that he does not want to fight anymore because all his people are gone due to war. Syntax fits this sentence because to use syntax, you would be arranging words to create a well worded sentence, and the sentence he stated is a great example. Syntax was one of the key devices Chief Joseph used in this particular passage.
Another meaningful device Chief Joseph used in his text was pathos. Pathos is a meaningful device because it shows sympathy. In the text Joseph explains “the little children are freezing to death. He is trying to portray a mental picture of what he noticed how cruel the conditions of were in the cold damp hills. Being human, showing sympathy is a curse, the author just wanted his audience, to show the young readers how harsh the circumstances were in this specific time. Pathos fits for a device for this sentence because to use pathos would be showing sympathy and feelings towards something. Joseph was a very unself centered person.
In Conclusion i feel like chief joseph shouldn't had gave up because they were struggling he should of kept going through , i understand hes men and children were dying left to right but i don't believe everybody died in that reservation. And i feel like as hard as they worked to build everything they had , he should of kept pushing through.
Almost there. Make sure you explain how? For example, how does parallelism help to explain the "devastation that was happening in his land." You must prove it.
