Assertion Analysis Blog #6 : John Winthrop

John Winthrop was an English Puritan lawyer and he was the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts bay colony . He was the second major settlement in New England following Plymouth colony . Winthrop led the first large wave of immigrants from England in 1630 and served as governor for 12 of the colony’s first 20 years . The devices John Winthrop uses in his passage is Imagery , Allusion , Diction to motivate his people.
John Winthrop does a great job motivating his people to be a good example by using imagery, and using small words to paint his picture. John states In he’s passage “eyes of all people are upon us “ such as saying when your on the top everybody watching you and watching everything you do and if you mess up they are going to judge you and our god which explains a lot because you being on the top you should set a good examples and do things the right way so everybody can follow your lead and do what they are supposed to do . If not it’s goes to judging you on what you did wrong and our god because he’s putting you in charge and your making it a mistake .
In addition John uses allusion to threaten his people to do what’s right . In his passage he states “prayers turn into curses upon us “ which he is trying to say do as I say or there will be consequences . When being on top you have to put fear in the people , so they understand where you're coming from . So there won’t be no mistakes . In order to motivate puritans to be the best example they can be so pushing them to do whatever it takes .
Puritans believed that god had formed a unique covenant, they believed god expected them to live according to the scriptures. The puritans wanted to be purified the church of England of its remaining Catholic influenced rituals and had return the simple faith of the New Testament.
